How old do you think kids should be before they can help do stuff on the stove, supervised? DD 1 is 8 and I think she's almost old enough to help stir or saute items ... but I'm so worried that she would get a burn or spill something boiling that I don't allow her to do anything near the stove yet, or anything with knives either. My kids help measure, pour ingredients (away from the stove), stir cold items etc. but I'm just so worried that the 8 YO will either cut herself or burn herself that she's limited in what she can do, even though she'd like to do more. What's your feedback? Thanks!

My boys are 9 and 11. They help cook all the time. In fact my 11 yo will make easy dinners all by himself a lot of the time. My 9 yo just stirs things most of the time....I don't think he feels as confident helping (or just doesn't want to).

DS has been helping me since he was 3 (he'll be 5 on Sunday). Of course it's supervised, and I help him, but he does stir and he would even fry his own egg...again under my supervision and with my help the whole time. He doesn't cut anything, but whenever he asks to help, I let him. He's lost interest for now, but once in a while he asks to stir things and I'll let him.

My DD's are 7 and 4. They love to help with the mac and cheese - they dump in the noodles, cheese, and they stir. DH allows them to flip pancakes. They add ham & cheese to scrambled eggs while they are in the hot pan, and they are allowed to put things in the oven (muffins, etc.) This is all under supervision, using utensils with long handles, and many reminders from me They also help putting ingredients together and mixing. I've shied away from anything like bacon/sausage that has the potential for grease to splatter on them, though.

My kids 4 and 7 both help out, the 4 yr old stirs and helps pours things the 7 yr old has made him and his brother lunch before, hotdogs and chips, he got plates, used the microwave, I sat and watched he didn't want my help. The 4 yr old does more work away from the stove but he will pour things in that are on there and will toss in potatoes into hot water, the 7 yr old will stir scrape, flip, and put things in the oven, all with my help I am not far away. I just showed the 7 yr old how to more hold the handle while he stirs the stuff in the pan so it doesn't go everywhere. If they realize I am cooking they are helping.

We haven't taken on anything actually on the stove top yet. We have gas, which I think makes a difference b/c it's an open flame. My son (8) helps, measure, stir, form, put things on cookie sheets. He has used the microwave on occasion. He uses the Cuisinarte with help and supervision. On weekend mornings I often ask him if he has learned to make coffee yet, but alas, that involves the stove, so no. I'm curious about this too, as I'd love to figure out when I can start him on helping on the stove, assuming it's not something involves hot oil or is very splashy.

We have a gas stove as well. I just make sure the flame is well inside of the edges of the pan they are using.
