Hi Ladies!
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any type of PC learn-to-read software for my 5yo? We've been doing workbooks, but I think he would really benefit from a computer game/program. Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!

Yes, Rory always asks if he can try that website! I will have to do some exploring this week and compare my options!

Hmmm, I would say just read, read, read to him which I know you already do! DD1 is above grade level in reading and that's about all I did with her. Even being a teacher I never did anything more but I knew reading to her was the most important. She did have a Leapfrog with the pen thing that she could scan the words and it repeated it for her so it was like she was reading. Things have changed so much since then!!!! It's much harder with DD2 and her speech issues so I really didn't buy anything new for her either. She uses the Leapfrog and a Leapster. I fear reading is going to be a challenge for her. IMO most advertised websites are HORRIBLE!!!!!!! I think they are advertised toward families that just want to plop their kiddos down in front of something and hope they learn. The commercials seem fake and just say what parents want to hear. It's unfortunate that some parents think there is a quick way to teach their kids to read! It helps if you can find out what programs your school district uses. Our's does visual phonics for teaching reading. Maybe your preschool would have some good recommendations too!

Oh, my SIL home schools with her sister. Let me see if they have any good PC programs they know of through their home school co-op!

Sorry I got off on my rant about worthless websites that just want you money I totally forgot to check which ones DD used at her school. Most teachers have them listed on their school websites! www.starfall.com/ is really good and FREE!

This isn't a website reading program but DS is your son's age and we have a lot of the "My first books" that are for learning to read. We read with him and are having him learn some of the basic words.
I asked his PreK teacher at conferences and she said the best thing is to do what Lil said and just keep reading and working on teaching them basic words and sounding out words.

Thank you so much for your input, ladies!! DS is working on the Starfall website as we speak, and just commented on how much he likes it! We read all thd time, and I figured since he likes playing on the computer (pbs kids) might as well throw in another fun learning website! Thank you
