Prepare yourself for a disaster Discuss the types of disaster most likely to happen - floods, tornadoes, blizzards, terrorism, etc. Plan what to do in each case. Ask for identification from people who want access to your home or business. Develop a personal disaster plan and build a disaster supply kit. Your kit should include: o A 3-5 day supply of water o Food that will not spoil and requires no cooking o First aid kit and needed medicines o Battery powered radio, cell phones, flashlights, and extra batteries o Personal items like toilet paper and plastic garbage bags o Portable generator, if possible Create an emergency communication plan with your family and friends. Be aware of your surroundings and alert to changes in your neighborhood. Be aware of suspicious behavior and report it to police. Get to know your neighbors! Know escape routes and practice using them. Adhere to travel restrictions announced by local government officials Be aware of the terror alert warning level.
Be alert to suspicious people who Use a false name Are reluctant to give you personal information and/or work information Use a credit card in someone else’s name Exhibit secretive or paranoid behavior Present questionable or fraudulent identification Keep the shades pulled all the time Follow no established patterns with departure or return times to and from home
Safety at home Do not open any suspicious mail. Use passwords on your computer. Do not share personal information on the internet. Make sure children know how to contact you. Make sure children know their address and know how to use 9 -1-1. Make sure your child’s school knows how to get a hold of you. Keep important local numbers handy. Learn how to shut off utilities such as gas, water and electricity.
