At what age did you let your kids use public restrooms by themselves? DS is 5, but I still have him come into the ladies room with me whenever he has to use a public restroom. I'm not that comfortable yet with him going into the men's room alone! I have a bad habit of assuming everyone is a creeper and the one time he's in there alone something might happen!!

My 5 year old boys would have raised holy hell if I tried to make them go in the ladies room. At 5 they were going in the men's room but I was waiting outside the door. They knew to holler if necessary.
Progressed from me outside the door to the bathroom being within my site so I could see who went in and out.

DS just turned 4 and I have let him go into the men's room by himself a few times... especially if I have a cart full of things and DD is with. I am always waiting right outside the door. If it is somewhere busy with a lot of people going in and out then I will bring him into the ladies room. And if DH is with then he just takes him. He just recently started making a big deal about not going into the girls room, its so hard to let him be independent!

Thanks for the feedback! We were at Panera the other day and he wanted to go to the men's room by himself. "I'll be fine mom, I can handle the bullies by myself!" Not sure where he got that from lol...time for me to let go I guess!

Ds1 was always very confident when it came to "bad guys". He was just going to hive them a punch and a kick and that would be the end of them! Kids are funny.

At 8 1/2 Ian doesn't, but he doesn't want to. We use a family bathroom when one is available but otherwise he comes in the ladies room. I guess I won't send him alone until we have a very frank discussion about sexual abuse and what to do if anyone is making him feel threatened or uncomfortable.

DS is 6 and I let him go in by himself, but I stand right by the door.

I think DD1 was 6. I've only let her go in alone at the grocery store and at McDonalds because I am seated close to the restroom. DD2 is allowed to go in with DD1 but not all by herself yet.

The 7 yr old can go by himself depending on where we are and how busy it is, but he still does come in the bathroom with me.

My dd is 4 and goes with me still but my friends son is 4 and she lets him go by himself. They have a pretty good system though, she stands by the door and they've discussed "bad touch" and what to do if someone make him feel uncomfortable. If he gets scared or uncomfortable he knows to yell and she'll come get him. She hasn't had to yet but he knows the plan.
