My daughter started school this week. She is in 1st grade. Fine no big deal right? She is a good kid, does good in school. Well 2 mornings in a row now she said she didn't want to go to school. Yesterday she said that, but was fine once she got out of bed. Today she said it, today she said she misses me when she is at school all day. She has always been at home w/ me. Note: she is 6 1/2 yrs. old. Sure she went to 1/2 day preschool, 1/2 day kindergarten. She was almost in tears. So I gave her some snuggles and she was ok. She got more snuggles right before she got on the bus.
I think she was tired, comfy in bed.
Anyone have ideas or tips for me? I sent her teacher a just a heads up e-mail to let her know.
Thanks much.

I thought about letting her bring a pic. of me thinking that would help her then I decided that probably would make the situation worse. Her teacher said she is doing fine. She is shy, but she will make friends and she does have 2 girlfriends in her class.

I think she'll be fine Jodi... transition and change is always difficult, especially for a child.

Have you read the Kissing Hand with her? That has always helped my DDs to have a kiss on their hand before they leave. It's only the 2nd day, it will get better!

Going from kindergarten (half day) to full day first grade was hard on my DD 1 too ... so I understand -- I think it is a change for the kiddos to be gone all day, and it seems like their level of learning is more intense. She's probably mentally tired after a full day, so that's adding to her having more of a challenge adjusting this year. It WILL get better (DD 1 adapted)--it's just that in the meantime you hate to see your sweetie feeling sad and upset. Does she have a stuffed animal she could keep in her locker (maybe not a favorite in case it gets lost?) - or could you put a little love note/ heart in her snack or lunch if it's from home? I've been reading The Kissing Hand for DD 2 who is stressing about kindergarten, so I like Lil's idea. Otherwise I'd just stay the course and know that it will get better!!! It just takes time, unfortunately ...
