I'm at a loss. For a couple of weeks now Ian has been waking up most nights somewhere between 1 and 3 am and staying awake for 1-2 hours. He tries to fall back asleep on his own at first (he says) but then does wake us up. He is not sick, not scared, not stressed, not having bad dreams, nothing hurts. He just is awake. I'm thinking we might call his doctor just because we are all so exhausted and I don't know what to do for him. Has anyone run into this?

Hmm, my kids haven't had this but I wanted to just chime in and sympathize! Sounds terrible. Poor Ian. Poor YOU! Could he practice a little meditation before bed to see if that helps? Or even do some mental calming imagery when he wakes up? I realize he's not having nightmares and isn't stressed, but maybe something like that would help regardless. Sorry I don't have better insight, hopefully other moms will see this post tomorrow and have ideas! I think talking to his doctor is a good idea. Maybe it's something that happens with a growth spurt?

Thanks Renee. Those are good suggestions. He is falling asleep instantly the first time as usual, but maybe doing some meditation or calming when he wakes would be good. He does meditation, yoga and mindfulness at school, so he should be able to draw on that. I'll suggest it if he wakes tonight! Thanks!

I had that issue when I was younger... though a bit older than Ian is. Basically my doctor said it was RLS... I never had an issue falling asleep, but could never stay asleep or fall back to sleep easily. It still creeps up on me from time to time.
I wouldn't take meds to sleep , so my NY doc had told me to eat a banana and drink a glass of Gatorade before bed because my body was more than likely lacking potassium and electrolytes, which can help relax the body.
