I need some perspectives here...
I'm currently in college to become a Nurse. I originally chose this path because of the job security, the pay and because I think I'd be good at it, I'm great with people and I dont mind bodily fluids. However! Its been my dream since I was 13 to be a writer. I've excelled in every English and composition class I've ever taken and thoroughly loved it. Now I'm wondering.. am I selling out because I feel my main responsibility is to provide for my family? And am I giving up my dream? With a degree in English I could get all sorts of mediocre jobs as well as my dream jobs of writing articles or becoming an author. I don't know.. take a chance and go for my dream job or play it safe and become a nurse?

Play it safe and write on the weekends. You don't need a degree to write your own book.

I'd usually say follow your dream but I know where you are coming from and I'd say at least finish your degree in nursing. Pursue and dabble in writing on the side to either find a niche or to even see if yo want to spend a lifetime doing it.
I have an English degree, concentration in writing and I have always thought I would be an editor or something like that, but as time went on my interest has become more about writing children's books. I don't have time to devote to it right now, but might pursue it when both kids are in school. English is one of those degrees where there really is no guarantee for anything. Though I loved every second of it, I regret the major and wished I'd ha e gone into nursing or something

Can you minor in English? Then you could go either way?

No nursing is a special program.. once you're in its all nursing except maybe two that are still related to the field. I think all of you are right though, even my husband thinks it'd be wiser to finish nursing up and do that for awhile and if I want to I can go back and take some composition classes and write on the side.
Thank you for all of your input.
