So my 5 year old has this rash around her mouth. I believe it started a little over a week ago when she snuck some starburst jelly beans and the nasty gooey juice sat on her lips all night while she slept. We kept cleaning it and it got better. Than it came back but I can't think of anything she ate that was acidic or irritating that might have sat there long enough to bother it.. It starts out looking chapped than looks a bit blistered. I'm putting hydrocortisone cream on it now. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

that is the first thing I thought of too... it should go away w/o anything other than at home treatment.. usually a couple weeks at most if that' what it is. Definitely stay away from any kind of acidic food or drink to not irritate.

Well she got sent home from school today because some other kids in the class had the same rash. Went to the doctor and turns out it is impertigo, an infectious bacterial infection. Joy!

Oh dear. THAT was going to be my suggestion. 24 hours on meds before she can go back? Luckily when DD had it, it was under her clothes so she wasn't kept from school.

Make sure you wash any towels, linens, etc. that she may have touched in HOT water. I've heard of whole families getting it by sharing a hand towel after washing their hands. It isn't dangerous but can sure be a PITA (pain in the arumpus).

I hope not. I've been giving her kisses!
