So I'm curious if anyone out there has gone through the process of step parent adoption. My DH and I are working on the drawn out process now and I'm just curious how the whole process works, we filed papers with the county in June, got the paperwork for background check and fingerprinting which we haven't gotten done yet as coordinating a trip downtown with limited hours and only 1 car is challenging, summer preschool is over this week so next week should be easier. But how much more after the background? And will there be a hearing if it is uncontested by their father (he signed away his rights). I ask the county these questions and I usually get the response "not my department" or "you will get something in the mail". Can anyone here answer these questions?

We had to go through a legal process in order get a correct birth certificate for Ian, because we are a Lesbian family. I believe the process is very similar, though he isn't adopted and neither of us are step parents.
We had to provide affidavits from people saying we were good parents. And then we went to family court. We did work with a lawyer, so she shepherded the process through.

No one was contesting our procedure either, but we did have to go to court. Although I found the whole process humiliating, It was pretty easy at that point and we had brought everything we were supposed to in terms of paperwork. The judge was very nice and only asked one question. "Can I hold the baby when we are done?"
