I feel like I want Ian to start to learn to cook this year since he's turning 10. I taught him to make Challah (a Jewish bread) last weekend, letting him do all of it, but just talking him through it. He was so proud. I hope to have him continue to make it.
So I'm looking for ideas for what he can learn to make. He doesn't like eggs, which I know people often start with. Pancakes could be good - I make a very nutty whole grain version he could learn.
I'd like him to learn healthy, whole foods with organic ingredients so it's consistent with how he eats now. One of his favorite things is a tofu recipe that involves high heat with a bit of oil on the stove but that makes me nervous.
He loves vegetarian tacos and I could totally teach him that.
I should mention he's a vegetarian with limited range of foods.
Hmmm - what else should he cook?

What about options that he could assemble and then bake in the oven. Vegetarian casseroles or muffins.

Soups would be another good one.
I sure wish my son would cook with me, but, he has no desire other than running the mixer when I bake.

Yes, all great ideas. Thanks! He doesn't eat casseroles but maybe if we found one together he wanted to try - I know kids are more likely to eat things they make.

I was just going to say I bet he might like it more if he were to make it himself. DS doesn't like a lot of things either, but magically when HE makes it they taste much better

On Splendid Table this weekend they were interviewing the author of a new vegetarian cookbook and Ian got excited about wanting to try something from it. I reserved it at the library!

You're welcome! I love this topic - my 9 YO is almost ready for more kitchen responsibility so I need to begin gathering ideas myself.
