When you take your DD/DS to the dentist do they describe every detail of what they're doing to you child TO your child? What do you think about them doing or not doing that??
We took DD to the dentist last week to get her retainer put in and it ended up not happening because DD freaked out. At first her dentist was just doing what she need to do to DD and DD was sucked into her cartoons they had on for her and she was doing great! Then her dentist started describing everything to her in full detail of what she was doing and it started freaking her out. What really made her go "I'm done" was when she was about to glue in the retainer and she tells DD that it's going to be really disgusting... What 5 year old is going to let you put something in there mouth after telling them that?? Ugh I'm really frustrated cause now we have to go back AGAIN. I mean, yes, tell DH & I everything that you're going to do but when it comes to the 5 year old... Just do what you need to do. DD knew she was getting a retainer but she didn't need to know the details of every single little thing. I'm just hoping DD will be OK when we go back next week.

Awww...that's no fun. Poor gal. But I totally agree...that's why DD has freaked out at the dentist too...and that was just for a cleaning! Don't tell my kid your shoving a big sharp metal thing in their mouth with really nasty goop on it that they can't spit out!!! oh man...totally feel ya. I'd say tho, next time you go in...tell them to just let her zone out into the cartoons maybe. that way she can get the retainer in without a big scene.

She had a cleaning right before she was getting the retainer put in and she was so chill for that. The dentist would just tell her to open when she needed her to and did what need to be done. She did good when she tried on the retainer too! And then she started with the details. Ugh. I told her to stop telling DD every detail of what she was doing and to just do it. CLEARLY you are freaking her out! And she just goes, "Well I think she needs to know everything I'm doing to her.".... No, no she doesn't. She's not an adult, she's 5 years old.

Uh oh ... my kids are going to the dentist on Wednesday. I think that simple explanations might be fine as in, "We're going to remove plaque now" NOT "This sharp tool is going to SCRAPE gunk off your teeth" !! And age-appropriateness seems to be very important. Maybe next time you can take the dentist aside and mention "toning down" the explanations?

Oh for sure, a little explanation like, "We're going to try on the retainer", she did fine with. Hopefully they don't screw it up again because it's really hard for DH to get days off to go back AGAIN.
