I thought I would share something I have learned about teaching your child to write. I have shared this with a few moms on FB but I thought I would share it here too. ~I highly recommend calling your school district to see what style of writing they teach, then you can google some practice sheets. ~Don't teach them to write in all CAPS! It's very hard to unlearn and they may become frustrated. ~The schools will have them unlearn what you have taught them if it's not the same way they teach. Our school district taught D'Nealian when DD1 was in Kindergarten and then decided to switch to EZ Write so the whole 1st grade had to relearn a different style of writing....it was sooooo frustrating! Now DD2 is learning EZ Write in preschool...it's great! So much easier to learn too. I hope this helps some moms with helping you kiddos learning to write and spares you from the frustration of having your kiddos relearn a different style! Happy Writing!!!!

I have kind of always wondered what the big deal is about style of writing. I say if you can write and it's legible I don't care how you got there. It all generally looks the same in the end, what is the big deal where you start your letters?

I don't think it's about where you start your letters but when it comes to writing sentences and learning words it's important to know when and where capitals letters are used. I am realizing that now with a second grader who is learning about writing sentences and proper nouns.

DS is just learning to write his name. He struggles with writing the lowercase "e" at the end of his name but he knows that that the "e" in his name is the small one and not the big one (that's what he says), he usually writes an uppercase "E". He is 3 1/2 and his first name is almost legible.
Helpful hint to call the school and find out so you can use the correct worksheets to practice.

When DD1 went to preschool they were teaching the kids to write their names in all caps. DD1 already wrote her name properly so they didn't try to change it. When she got to kindergarten the teacher was happy that she didn't have to reteach SOME of the kids how to write their names! =) With DD2, she writes her name properly and when learning to write it she had her own names for letters. She would say "Big A, pirate letter, dot letter, little a." If I told her the letters she knew which ones I meant by how she remembered them. I figure, hey, whatever works! =) She just started preschool and is one of the only kids who knows how to write their names NOT in all caps.
