DS has been doing really well since we switched to underwear, but is still having some difficulties with #2. Last night he sat for a long time twice as he had started to have a bm in his pants, but once we were on the potty he couldn't get any out. We read a book and after each page is done he needs to give a good push w/ his tummy muscles and every other page he does a "push and wiggle" (it worked for him once and so he likes to do it again). Then again this morning same thing. It is coming out really sticky, but only a little in his pants.
What foods can I give him to help make it not so sticky and easier to come out? We haven't really had problems with this before.

Give him a banana, that will help harden things up...or so my doc says. Cut down on foods that have a ton of fiber in them too...that way he can get a more solid BM

That's what I was thinking corals, but didn't know which foods to try. He hasn't been drinking as much liquid at home and it is sticky and too hard to push out, so we'll try to increase fluid intake.

I would try increasing his water and maybe even try mixing in a little prune juice into either his milk or give it to him watered down. Not sure of his age, but we give DD the generic for Miralax, it is a powder you mix in water and it just helps her so she doesn't have to push so hard and not get backed up.

Bananas can go either way so you may want to give him those as well. I agree with the apples and pears too.

Flax oil helps too. You can add it into his cereal in the morning.

Extra water and prune juice are the only things that worked for DD3 when she was having poop issues. Her problem was that hers were TOO big (this girl LOVES her bananas!) and too hard and so she'd tear herself getting it out. For my other girls applesauce and pears would usually help any issues with the poops.

Ugh! Still having major issues with this. We gave him more water and some prune/apple juice. The last two nights we spent most of the night on the potty trying to get him to push it out, he would say he didn't have to go, get off the potty and less than 5 min later be pooping in his pants (this happened 3 or 4 times last night and 3 times again tonight).
If the 3 of us survive this phase of parenting I will be shocked!

When he finally does poop is it easy for him or a struggle? If it goes- or rather comes out- easily then I'd think that his poop problem is a mental one- he just is afraid (maybe) to poop on the potty.

Angel- It depends on the day. The other day it appeared he was really having to push and it was just so sticky. He doesn't have any bleeding or blood in his stool, his stomach isn't hard.....he has pooped on the potty before and gets really excited and proud of himself and we praise him a lot for it.
I am just not sure what his problem is this week with it (mental, physical or both). We'll keep working on it!

yeah, increase water and fiber. Watch intake of dairy and bananas - sometimes these can constipate. DS is now 8 and he went thru a phase for years, probably age 4 thru 6, where he would refuse to poop - too busy - and then he would poop his pants and it looked like diarrhea. He would always tell me he didn't know he had to poop and I didn't believe him - I thought "how do you not know you have to poop?" Finally one day I looked it up on-line and there is a medical condition - ecopresis (or something like that) where the kid gets so constipated that the colon enlarges and loses feeling so the kid really can't tell he has to poop. I talked to the pharmcist and he said it was a common problem in boys, usually around the age of 5 or 6, and told us to use Miralax. Just something to keep in my if he has trouble in the future.
