So in my 20's when I didn't have a kid and could afford to color my hair, I would do highlights/lowlights every 4 months or so. After having DS and not having $125 every 3-4 months for hair color/cut I decreased the frequency to about 2x/year.
I stopped doing highlights/lowlights in Sept 2010 and in the last 6 months have been noticing gray hairs around my face....ugh!
I am scared to color my hair myself, but don't have the $125 twice a year to get it colored. I am too young to show gray at 33.....what should I do?

Just dye it 1 shade lighter than your natural hair color so gray will not show. My mom does that at home herself because that was what her stylist did and cheaper to do it yourself My mom touches up her roots when they need it My younger brother started getting white hairs around 18 lol. I have no grey hair. My hair just gets darker unless I lighten it.

I have had gray hair since 18 yrs old. I'm 34 now and for the past 5 years I have to dye my hair every 4 weeks because I have pure white hairs coming in! I just use a box dye, Clairol usually and dye it black. I've got very short hair, short cut/boy cut in the back and longer around the face. Ever once in a while, I go to a Salon for a deep conditioning treatment because I do color my hair so often, but they are suprised with how healthy my hair actually is with continual color (black dye) that goes in my hair. I can't afford to go to the salon and this has worked well for me. Good luck!

Dh had gray hair in high school, my mother had quite a bit (enough to color her hair) at 30-- but she had 3 kids already. I have a few here and there and I am 40, but didn't have first kid until 30. (not sure if pregnancy hormonal flux has anything to do with it)

I am 31 and have colored my hair since 19. I don't remember when I first noticed gray hair, in between coloring but I always wanted to hold them up while my hair was being colored. I think going natural is beautiful (I do wear some makeup to hide blemishes and pores). I have decided to let my hair grow natural, so two months ago I went in to get my hair color to match my dark roots, wow my hair is darker than I remember :-) but the grays are slowly popping up and I'm getting excited. I worked hard for those suckers.... and it's free!
I say, go with the flow. It may end up being beautiful on you. From your profile picture, you look to be a beautiful woman already.

I haven't noticed any yet, but I'm sure they are there. I'm a blonde- used to be a white blonde but over the years it has darkened. Summer it's lightened by the sun and in the winter it gets dark blonde with a few lighter streaks, unless I cut my hair and then the light streaks are gone. I've never dyed my hair - too cheap and lazy to keep up with most things. My roots would be so nasty! I don't even keep up with waxing my eyebrows - might do that once or twice a year. I'm hoping to go gray gracefully - but we'll see how that goes when I actually have to look at myself. I think women with a full head of white or gray hair can be beautiful.

I went natural last year b/c it's free, I don't think the grays are too noticeable to others...but they are starting to freak me out (obviously or I wouldn't have posted...). Everyone always notices my hair because of the curls so I want to keep it nice...but cheap. I may just stay natural for awhile longer.

I turn 29 in two weeks and I have been going grey since about 24. I first noticed one white hair and thought it was from the cat because she liked to sit on the top of my chair. I went to pull it out and was shocked to find out it was attached to my head!!!!
So anyway we don't have a lot of money either and I only color my hair about 2x a year as well. I was really afraid to color my hair myself but I bought phat foam from walmart and it is SUPER easy to do by myself. Did I mention I have really dark hair and it is really easy to see my grey hair. I am constantly being teased about it and lately I just don't care.
Anyway, try a foam hair color you can buy yourself....super easy to use and cheaper then having it done.

Color it yourself from out of a box. That's what I do occassionally. Yes, I have gray. IMO I think I started to get gray or white hairs after I got married or had kids.

Depending on where the gray hair is you could get a partial highlight. Which at a place like Fantastic sams will run you about 30 dollars. Not to bad. I think they do about 12 or so foils. 8 or so on top and a few on each side framing your face. Also, you could go to the aveda institute where I went for school. I think a partial is about 25. You really cannot get a bad color job there as they HAVE to have the instructor approve of the color before getting the prescrip for it. Only thing you have to be prepared to be there awhile if you get someone who is in the beggining stages of school. The course is 10 months and you are not allowed to work on any clients until about 2 months in. So I wouldn't worry about it being a school like some people freak out.

I say go for some foils once or twice a year and hope it looks like it is different shades instead of dark and light-- have something in between.

I'm a student at Minnesota School of Cosmetology. We rock the foils. Come up and get some foils for super cheap sometime. Woodbury off 694 and Valley Creek road.

I'm 36 and starting to get gray hair. I have at least half a dozen now. I won't dye my hair again, I'm embracing it, I earned every one of those gray hairs!

I'm 38 and do at-home coloring. Like you, when I was younger I got highlights, but as I got older, with kids and working less I have less money to spend. I've been coloring my hair at home for a few years now, and while I loathe doing it, I'd rather deal with the inconvenience than look 20 years older than I am!!
