Do you hang a pickle in your tree? Is the present just for the kids or do the adults get to participate? What present does St. Nicholas leave for this tradition?
The tradition goes (probably German American born) that St. Nicholas leaves an extra present under the tree for the person that finds the pickle he hides in the tree (usually a glass pickle ornament). The first kid that finds it gets an extra present, the first adult to find it gets extra luck all year.
The pickle was probably chosen because it blends in so well to the color of the tree.

I've never heard of it either. I wouldn't do it though.

We have done it at extended family (german mostly) christmas gatherings-- and used a real pickle (put in just before the kids start looking). My daughter found it the first year and was thrilled

I saw this in a magazine or something and thought it was really cute....but our xmas's have kinda falling out in the way of being with family so it is just the four of us at home. I probably wouldn't do it anyway because I don't like to see kids getting left out
