Has anyone used this? it is for migraines, seizures, weight loss and a slue of other things. my neuro wants me to take it for my ocular migraines but I am nervous about the side effects other than the weight loss one ;-). I have read it is generally helpful but it can cause nausea which I already have all the time and don't want it to be worse and it can cause eye problems which I already have as well. Worst of all it can literally cause you to sound stupid and display basically symptoms of Alzheimer's! Loss of words, getting lost in familiar places, etc...
Wanted to hear anyone's experience with it if they have any. Thanks!

Dh's personality changed. He was cranky, nasty at time, difficult to be around.

If you are going that route, try Imitrex if you haven't already.. side effects aren't as bad. My ma takes it, has been taking it for many years!

I take it....been on it for about five years. Takes awhile to get used to but it's completely helped me my headaches. I do have slight word retrieval issues but I have some mental tricks for those. I didn't lose weight. I'm on a high dose... 400mg so at first the side effects were pretty intense but nothing else worked for my situation.

My Dr put me on it because I started getting heachaches that where lasting for days sometimes weeks at at time. I went off it awhile ago after getting the flu and haven't started it again yet. I don't recall any side affects especially like the ones you are discribing. I think I might have been a little moody for awhile. It curb my appetite which was nice because I need to lose a few pounds and I have syncopy which results in convulsions sometimes. So all and all she thought it would be good for me. My DH gets severe migraines that are way worse than mine and I told him he should go in and ask to be put on it as well.
My Dr. also prescribed Imitrex. I only took it once and only took half a pill. I was at work and I started to feel really out of it. I almost asked one of my co-workers to give me a hug! I had trouble concentrating and couldn't focus on what I was doing. I had an appointment a few days later and the nurse asked me if I took the imitrex and how it worked for me. I told her I didn't like it and I couldn't explain how it made me feel. Then she asked if I felt like I had been drinking and that's when it hit me....that was exactly how I had felt....and I only took half the pill!!!!! That one to me is WAY more dangerous than the topamax.

topomax is prevenative and imitrex is for the actual headache just so people are informed :-)
I get headaches where I will go blind in my left eye so I need them prevented for safety measures. I think I will wait until after my MRI to start on pills and hopefully the side effects won't be too bad...not counting on it though because I always have problems with meds.
