So for the past few weeks DS randomly complains throughout the day (and sometimes night) that his eye hurts. It's always his right eye, and I've never seen anything in it. Whenever he complains, I wet a clean wash rag and he rubs his eye with it and then he says it "feels better". Today, the skin under his eye was red from him rubbing it, and his eye was watering a little. I asked him to show me exactly where it hurts and he points to the corner of his eye (closest to his nose). I make sure he washes his hands a lot more often as he rubs his eye more, and I clean the area around his eye often also. I'm sure I'll end up taking him in, but would just appreciate any thoughts or ideas as to what you think might be going on!! DH thinks that it might be his vision, but I doubt it because overall he has excellent vision. I'm sure it's some sort of invisible irritant or something like that, but just think it's weird that it's been going on for a little while...

My eye gets sore when i wake up if my eyelid doesn't close all the way (due to car accident) because it gets over dry. I know some people can have that issue naturally. Have him gently close his eye and try to see if you can see any of the white area along the bottom-- use a flashlight because it may be shadowed from his eyelashes.

Yes, ds will probably need to see an Eye Dr. for prescription eye ointment. “…it's some sort of invisible irritant.” I agree, it probably is some sort of invisible irritant.
I’m experiencing eye irritants in both eyes, both corners, right now, and have been for awhile, off & on.
I think for me, it probably started with me rubbing my eyes, but had not washed my hands, right beforehand. It helps when I wash my eyes with warm washcloth with mild soap, then rinse it out with warm, wet washcloth. (dry washcloths hurt more) I found if I did not use mild soap, that my eyes still hurt after I washed them.
Then I put “Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment” (It’s by prescription from Eye Dr.) I use a q-tip to apply the ointment. I put a very little amount of the ointment (it doesn’t take much) on the side of the q-tip, and rub it on/in my eye lashes. I do this as the last thing I do before bed, and then sleep with the ointment in, because it’s harder to see thru the ointment, plus then I don’t rub the ointment out of my eyes. Just an FYI, I found I have to put the cap back on the tube very quickly, otherwise, ointment still keeps coming out of the tube. The tube is very small, only 1/8 ounce (3.5g) for the whole prescription.

Not sure what area you are in but the Eye Care Center has two doctors that specialize in working with children. They have a location in Fridley and in Maplewood. Dr. McCarty is wonderful, I take DS to see her. She makes kids very comfortable and eases any fears they might have about the eye doctor. www.eyecarecenters.net/
