I am looking for a good therapist for my daughter (preferably one that will be covered by DH's EAP. Here's the issue-- she came home from school a few weeks ago and had pulled out most of her eyebrows during math class. She has major emotion regulation problems (gets to where she can't speak and can't stop shaking). She is in a gifted program of high IQ- so she is smart. I took her to one therapist who had no clue-- Her pulling her eyebrows was a tic from ADD meds, even tho only during math and only a few times, too much screen time (true), I was obsessive because I had a healthy snack in my purse (and corrected her when she referred to it as fruit snack (it wasn't). I am pushing her to hard because I informed her right off about DD school performance(high standardized test scores, etc) so she wouldn't assume that she just needs a tutor. With my master's in counseling, I knew some of the information she would need and gave it to her and she took it another way. She really rubbed me the wrong way and I cancelled the rest of the appts I had scheduled. I am trying to get something set up with school counselor, but with the new year would also like to find someone to help her longer term--she also can go without sleep pretty often too so I worry about that. Help me!

I can tell you are emotional because it took me a few times reading your original post to figure out what exactly it was you were saying. Please take my reply with the best of intent. Have you heard of trichotillomania (trick-o-till-a-mania)? It is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Pulling out her eyebrow when she is stressed may be a sign of this. You can read more about it here: www.mayoclinic.com/health/trichotillomania/DS00895In regards to your search for a medical provider for your DD, are you looking for a therapist, a psychiatrist, or a psychologist? Be sure you know what it is exactly that you're seeking. In the HealthPartners systems Dr. Elizabeth Reeve, Dr. In-Lin Tuan, and Dr. Amy Nygaard are all excellent. I don't know if any of them are taking new patients or if your insurance will cover them. I'm sure you could find out by calling the number on the back of your insurance card. In my experience, many brilliant people with high IQs have difficulties in other areas of their lives. Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the info. I know about Trichtotillimania from my psychopathology class and such. We have a high deductible insurance but can get 8 therapy sessions per issue covered each year from his EAP so trying so find someone that is authorized from them-- they told me several before. I guess I am looking for a therapist first so she can spend time building a relationship and I know that MDs do not always have time for the talking part. From her ADD she does have a pediatrician that does her med stuff, but since her primary CNP left, that doc may become her regular one. Currently , we are in Health East system (Woodwinds and clinic). I went to Eagan counseling (new name) but not wanting to go there.
Keep suggestions coming. Thanks

Hey sweety. I think the best thing to do would be to call the number on the back of your insurrance card. They can give you a list of therapists in your area that are under your coverage. I noticed you said 8 sessions would be covered. I know for my therapist they will approve so many sessions and then if the therapist finds it necessary to continue therapy they have to put in a request for further approved sessions.
I would start there though. And good for you for canceling the sessions with the therapist you didn't approve of. So many people don't do that and then end up not wanting to continue with therapy even though they should. Sometimes it can take a few to find one that you are comfortable with!

Best to call and ask for the provider list if you are seeking free sessions. Children's has many really good doctors if you start looking again. Working with someone who specializing in dealing with children is really important. At Children's I know the team generally reviews the case after intake and then makes a decision about the best fit.
From years of experience I also know that given the age of your child any doc is going to want to visit with your child to build relationship and get a sense of what is going on. All the background information you provide may or may not be helpful in getting to the root of what is going on. I don't want you take this the wrong way, but there is a reason doctors do not treat family members-- sometimes you need someone with a different perspective and your degree, while helpful, might actually lead to assumptions, or providing information that a specialist, may or may not find helpful.
I do agree that it is really important for you to find the right fit for your DD and the first doc was not the right fit. But a word of caution, the doctor is for your DD and not for you-- so she needs to feel comfortable first and foremost. It took us lots of trials prior to finding someone that is a good fit. Keeping trying and reaching out for help for your daughter and hang in there yourself. It seems the best doctors have long waiting lists and are hard to get to see -- it took us six months to everything set up and a Ped doctor and therapist all helping pull strings to move us up the list.

Thanks for the feedback, and I am not taking things personally. I just feel that if the therapist is expressing preconceived ideas and seems to have her own agenda, she probably isn't the best. I have stuff set for her to start working with school counselor for a while until things are sorted out. DD knows her and likes her already so hopefully that will be a good start.
