This is one thing I do not get. White Elephant. I have been invited to 3 Holiday Party's and all of them say to bring a white elephant to exchange. So I did Google it and it says to bring a funny, silly item you typically have around the house? I don't know about that. I don't get it LOL. Is it supposed to be fun or for real? If it is for real sorry I do not want a half burnt candle....So can anyone explain what it is and if you have ever done something like this what did you get? I don't want to look dumb and buy something new if that is not what it is. Thanks!

It's something you have sitting around, but not something used IME. So often it's a regift. I have done these and gotten a funny nightlight, a candle (but not burnt), tea and a mug...can't think of others.

we did this for a holiday work party.. it was either an unused regift item from home or something bought 5 dollars or under.. or it could very well be a funny gag gift!

Once when I participated in a White Elephant exchange I brought unopened perfume. Kind of random, but a friend had kindly given me a gift set of four little perfumes, very nice but unfortunately not my scent preferences. I was so happy to be able to pass them along to someone who wanted them!
Other "nicer item" ideas could be things like: a serving dish or platter you never use, candles (I know that I have so many I'll never use them all), a picture frame that you don't need -- things like that. You could also bring gag gifts that you have leftover -- whoopy cushions, reindeer antlers, goofy hat etc. Have fun!

I always bring nicer items. I have gotten over the years towels, wine racks, dvds. I have used as my gift things like mugs, homemade cookies or candy(people love this one) or cheap games I find at Target. I have been thinking about things to bring this year and will probably end up doing something small and homemade. For me I don't have anything extra around my house to give away...I don't keep anything I don't use. It is a fun game to play and no big deal if you dont like what you get, just give it away later or reuse it at another white elephant party.

When I worked at IBM, the running joke was a banana hanger. Someone brought it back every year! I have brought things such as a bottle of champagne that has been in my refrigerator, picture frames, DVDs... I used to have a White Elephant Exchange at my house that was made in to a game, and we always had a lot of fun with it!
The reason that I like White Elephant Gifts is that it keeps you in the spirit of giving, without actually having to spend anything. I think that they key is to bring something that you may not have use for or interest in, but that someone else might!

That about covers it, Love! Look around your house and see what you have that you've never used/liked/knew what it was! Wrap it up! Someone else might just love it!

I just ended up going to VS and buying a nice perfume bottle. I went around the house and honestly found nothing. I was going to give a scentsy warmer I hardly use but then thought I would need one again. I think I think too much into this. HAHA. I might do a old caribou coffee mug for another but who knows!

in my family we buy gifts. Usually there is an amount set like $10 or $20. We don't do the silly gifts it has to be something that you wouldn't mind giving or getting as a gift. We wrap them up and then we roll the dice. If you get doubles you choose one of the wrapped gifts in the middle. Once all the gifts are gone you unwrap them and show people what you got then you roll the dice again. If you get doubles you can exchange your gift for one that someone else has. It can be really fun especially if people start fighting over one gift!
