We finally have a dishwasher but it STINKS! Dishes come out smelling like dead fish, things aren't getting clean, etc. Any suggestions??

Put a bunch of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a HOT cycle.
Was your house empty for a while? Sometimes if the traps dry out it stinks for a while.
Check the holes in the spray arms to make sure they aren't plugged.

Found this. Sounds like a good idea:
It's a two phase job, easy to do... First, I would check you strainer at the bottom of the dish washer. It has a screen to catch larger food items, and they might be building up. After thats clean, phaseII - try the vinega and baking soda. first spread a small box of the baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher, then splash around your vinegar. It will foam, bubble and clean out the nasties. Keep applying the vinegar until it stops bubbling. Then, run the dishwasher on HIGH temp and let dry. It should smell much better. A word of advice, some people just place dirty dishes in the washer, but dont clean off the 'chunks' of food. These could be the larger items cloging up your strainer.

I've heard of the vinegar trick before too, haven't had to try it though!

I'd try vinegar, if that doesn't work, get a bunch of lemons and squeeze the juice out and do the same with that. Lemon juice can fix nearly anything!

Try the vinegar, it should work. We had a stinky dishwasher in the past and vinegar worked. I second the suggestion of cleaning out the trap too, nasty things can get stuck in there! Also, try and catch it at the moment it's running through the disposal and flip your disposal on, that can help 'suck' things through. good luck!

Ya, what everyone else says, but there is also a dishwasher cleaner you can buy... can't remember what it's called... Magic something?

Do you have a water softener? If you do, check and make sure it has salt in it. When mine is out of salt my dishwasher stinks and the dishes come out all foggy.
