DS had the sneezers (hehe) all day Sunday which is usually sign of him getting a head cold. Today he had a VERY slight cough and beginning signs of runny nose. Tonight he was digging in his mouth telling us it hurt, so we looked at it with a flashlight and it seemed normal color. But he was crying that it hurt. I was thinking it was just a cold but now I'm wondering if it is something else. I do not get sore throats when I get a head cold so I have no idea. I would say it is a sore throat/strep but it isn't red or inflamed. Anyone ever experience this In kiddos? This is the first time he as alerted us he is in pain as he has a high tolerance and if he is sick he sure doesn't act like it. TIA!

Lots of cold fluids and mini popsicles help...it also helps distract them from the pain hope T feels better soon!

I sure hope so. I was just wondering if I should take him in to be seen or avoid the waiting room germs! UGH! Weird thing is he is eating like a hound. Growth spurt that is for sure!

In my experience if he is eating it isn't strep. The 6 yr old had strep twice early last year and he didn't eat or drink because it hurt so bad, he was swollen.
Try the cold stuff and see if that helps, and some Tylenol, check it again tomorrow if he says it is hurting and see if it has changed at all.

The post nasal drip can cause a sore throat, or maybe the air is dry in the house? Every cold is different and you never know when one could come with a sore throat :-) Cold items will keep any inflammation down and lessen the pain. Also some warm water with honey should help coat the throat.

I think my clorseptic (sp lol) bottle says 6 years? You dont swallow it so I think it would be okay. Well I dont swallow, I spray and then spit as it is soooo nasty. He seems to be doing okay today. Cough did not worsen. We are staying home today for a rest day. Still in jammies. He is still in good spirits so who knows!

My instinct says no, Vic...especially with young kiddos...ok, I just checked and the Cepacol website says only for kids 6 and older. Love..I would hold off on taking him in, especially if he's still eating like a champ! Do the cold fluids/popsciles and warm tea/water with honey and lemon...hopefully he'll be good to go in no time!

Oh no I despise taking him in. Last thing I want is to sit in the germy waiting room. I think he just needed a down day and he has no other symptoms then the slight cough. Maybe this change of weather IS making his throat dry!

I would just keep an eye on him and let him rest as much as needed.

I was always told the following when I worked in family practice. If a child has a sore throat with NO other cold symptoms (cough, runny nose) have them checked for strep. If the child HAS cold symptoms hold off on the dr visit for a couple of days and see if the sore throat resolves as most kids get a sore throat initially the first couple of days of a cold.
