DH called me about this when he first heard the story. He was SUPER upset by it. I talked to my girls AGAIN about not putting things around their necks that don't belong there and about never putting things around their necks that are tight. I must be the odd ball, though- I thought zip ties were an obvious danger. I remember DH freaking out about the DDs wearing breakaway necklaces and I said, "It's not like they're zip ties!" I'm surprised, though, that a 5 year old knew HOW to circle a zip tie! Unless it was a large one that was already circled... I use industrial zip ties as boning in my Ren bodices and make sure that they are up and out of sight of the girls, but not until after I told them to never put them around their necks.

DH uses zip ties all the time in his business and I made sure he saw the story on the news and realized how serious it is! He's a great dad, but sometimes he doesn't think about things being dangerous. I get to be the paranoid parent!

Seriously, there are some things that you don't even think about being a danger, and then you see a story in the news about a tragedy and it scares the living daylights out of you. I was driving in the car yesterday with my DDs who are 6 and 3, and got my first, "Mommy, what happens when you die?" and "Well, what does it feel like?" type questions. I tried to reassure them that most people die when they're very, very, very old - but also tried to get in a few "we always wear life jackets at the lake" and "we always look both ways when we cross the street" type points as well. (Sigh.)
