www.seriouseats.com/2008/10/how-old-is-too-old-to-trick-or-treating.htmlTrick or Treating.... How old were you when you quit? How about you mommies with older kidlets... When did they - will you make them - quit? The girls don't go anymore, because they are always in ND hunting with Dad! I think their last years were 5th or 6th grade. Benny's last year to trick or treat found him on the couch with Mom watching movies... he got Phenomia... and was sick as could be. I feel really bad he got jipped out of his 'last hurrah'... MAY let him go this year if he asks... he's in 7th grade

Ummm... the last time I went I was 17 lol FREE CANDY!! Why would you wanna give that up?! My cousins (who are 27 & 32) still go out every year. They're tiny little midgets that can pull it off though and they always wear costumes that fully cover them... face and all. So you would never be able to tell how old they are.

As soon as they hit 7th grade I think is the right age to stop trick or treating. Usually by then the kids have their own halloween parties and invite their friends. My DD went last year 7th grade) with a friend but this year she's going to a friend's party.

I think I would draw the line at 18. Trick or Treating is fun and I don't think we should discourage our kids from going if they want to when they are in middle or high school. As long as they are being respectful of property and not vandalizing anything - what's the harm?

I think my boys went until they were 14 or 15--free candy. I told them as long as they wore costumes and were polite, I was fine with it. I've seen kids not in costumes just going out door to door. If they show up at my house I make them sing a song or do a dance or something. No costume requires extra effort before getting candy.

I don't mind older kids Trick Or Treating as long as 1) they're wearing an actual costume (no throwing on a Vikings jersey and thinking that qualifies), 2) they are polite, and 3) they make way for/help out the younger kids. Bunsy, I LOVE your idea that older kids without costumes have to do a song or dance to get candy. I'm TOTALLY doing that this year!!!
For me, age 13 was the last year I went out, after that it was parties at a friend's house, that type of thing.

I was still going in high school, but I had a little sister that I could bring along as an excuse. I have never brought my kids trick or treating to houses, we dress up and go to the shops that are giving out treats and taking pictures. We've done Cub Foods every year and get a good haul just from them. There is also a downtown Elk River trick or treat through the businesses we've done, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to do it this year as it's on a Friday every year to cut down on the big kids.

DS1 is in 8th grade and he will still go this year. We always go as a family...I can't imagine telling him he has to stay home. We get the older kids coming to our house a little bit later. I finally turn the light off when I'm trying to get my kids to bed!

Where I grew up the adults used to dress up and go out in the evening after the kids finished -- trick or treating for adult beverages, etc.

I agree w/ Bunsy & Renee - if the kids are dressed in costume, polite and respectful to the little kids then they can be in HS for all I care.
Since we both like taking DS out trick or treating I leave a basket of candy on our steps. No one has ever taken all of it....that's what we'll do this year too
