Just wondering what you would think/feel/say if you got a note in your paper from your Paper Delivery Person..... saying this....
"Due to cost of living expenses I would like to ask you to save your plastic bags for me....."
"If your kind enough to give me carrier tip please direct it to my home address...".
Your Thoughts? I'll share mine below.....
(a Friend on Facebook posted this.)
this was her post:
So we get this typed note from our paper carrier in the Sunday paper today. "Due to cost of living expenses I would like to ask you to save your plastic bags for me.....". Then he gives his direct phone number if we should ever miss any paper. Finally, he says, "If your kind enough to give me carrier tip please direct it to my home address...". I don't think the newspaper company would be too happy if they knew this paper carrier is inserting these in every paper. BTW we send him a nice tip every Christmas.

We often get things from paper delivery and garbage collectors around Christmas asking for money. I do ignore them. I wish we had money to give to them tips, although I would do it another time of year, but we don't.
We do save our plastic bags and re-use them, but I would gladly give at least some of them to the paper delivery person if it helped in some way. Do they have to buy the bags? I don't see how that helps, but I would do it, sure.

This was my response....
I don't see anything wrong with his note. Living is expensive today, and I have a friend who delivers the paper, and the cost of the bags is something they pay for. Infact, this friend of mine has to rely on tips around christmas to purchase christmas gifts for their 3 children.....
for many, the paper route is a 2nd job, getting up at 3 or 4 am to do the paper route, then go to work at their other job....not something I'd really want to do. If he provides you with good service, save the bags, no one says you HAVE to give a 2nd tip.....
The Delivery person IS responsible for buying the bags....

Then I would give him most of the bags. My wife would also have to buy bags to use for school if we don't save them, so we would save some for diapers, and give the rest back.

I never realized that they have to buy the bags! If my delivery person asked me to save the bags I certainly would. I just recycle them anyway!

I didn't know they bought their own bags....if I got the paper and my delivery person requested that I give bags back I would. I don't get the paper anymore, just read it online

I'd save the bags if I had an easy way to get them back to the delivery person. I had no idea they have to buy the bags out of their own pocket. I understand why he gave out his direct number because they are fined a certain amount if they miss a house. (Our paper carrier has forgotten our house a number of times so we had to call -- felt bad about it but didn't want to go out and buy a paper when we have a subscription, so that was unfortunate.) We too tip our delivery person around the holidays--although not a large sum because, quite frankly, he or she does an "eh" job. (Sometimes the paper is basically in the street.) But I'm sympathetic and know that every little bit helps, so we still do it.

Our newspaper is never in a bag, they just wrap a rubberband around it and leave it at the door. If it were in a bag and I received that note, I would save them... I would just recycle them anyway.

I also got that type of letter soliciting tips (except for the plastic bag part) when I had paper delivered in the past. I had no idea they had to pay for the plastic bags. Maybe that's why I didn't usually get mine in a plastic bag. But if that is the case, I would have gladly given them back to the person.
