We had a HORRIBLE night last night--our water softener apparently decided to go down in a blaze of glory. Spewed water all over and flooded a portion of our basement. UGHHHHHHH. So we spent hours late last night moving things from the "wet" side to the "dry" side of the basement, throwing away things that were too soaked to save, sopping up the water, pulling up carpeting to sop up water, strategically placing fans around to help things dry etc. etc. etc. UGHHHHHHH. What a disaster!!!!!!
So I'm looking for some advice.
1) Any input on how to most quickly dry up a carpeted area? Like I said, we pulled up the wet parts and have them elevated/propped up with fans on them (after soaking up as much as we could with towels). We don't have a dehumidifier--maybe we should buy one? Any other ideas?
2) Any input on what brand water softener to buy? And/or recommendations on plumbers/installers who cover the SW Metro area?
THANKS -- I'm exhausted today just thinking about it. DH and I both work today so it'll be interesting to see how/if things dried out decently today while we were gone. UGHHHHH again!!!!!!! BLECH.

Use a carpet shampooer to get the water up out of the carpet. Do you have homeowners ins? Call them to see if/what they will cover. Water softners are pretty easy to install, can you DH do it himself. We bought one from Menards and DH put it in himself. It would be really easy to do since all the pulmbing is already there.
Good Luck

Buying a dehumidifier would probably be good because it's going to take quite a while to get ALL the moisture out of your basement. Even when it feels dry, there will still be dampness. Your pulling up carpet and fan idea is a good one. You have to get under the carpet dry.
We bought our water heater from Home Depot and DH and FIL installed it. I know Depot and Menards have lists of contractors to call too. We used one of Depot's contractors to install our front doors.

I agree with the idea of buying a dehumidifier. It will help a lot to pull the moisture out. We bought one at Menards a few years ago and it works great. I would check Angie's list for plumbers, or like someone else said Menards and Home Depot will have lists of contractors you could use. Sears sells water softeners too, and they would install, I'm sure there's an addt'l cost for installation though. Good luck!!
