I have never considered my daughter to be a picky eater until lately. She is great about eating vegetables, drinking milk and has pretty decent table matters...but lately she will not eat meat unless it is covered in ketchup. She will get very temperamental and throw her meat everywhere unless ketchup is on her plate. At first, I didn't mind giving her ketchup, I thought as long as the food got in her belly, I would be happy...however, now she licking the ketchup off of her meat rather than eating it, or sticking her whole hand in the ketchup pile and licking her hand and fingers. It is a huge mess!
Did anyone have a similar experience when their children were her age (she will be 2 in November)?
Any suggestions to break her from this?

Do you guys use ketchup or any other condiments? DD likes to eat whatever and however we are, so if she sees us dipping our food in something, or adding ketchup to it, she want the same. If that doesn't help what about using something else like applesauce. I know this age can get so hard with food, hope you find a solution Andie!

My daughter is 18 months and is not a meat eater either. She will it meat if it is shredded up with something else (usually because she can't taste it or pick it out!), but she WILL NOT eat pieces or chuncks (unless it is turkey hot dogs). What if you just put the ketchup on the meat and don't put a pile on her plate? That way she will still have the ketchup, but only have it on her meat. That is what I do with scrambled eggs because that is the only way DD will eat them. I know exactly what you are going through so any other advice from others would be great!

Also, just a reminder that Ketchup has a ton of sugar in it... But hopefully you can get her back on track with the eating. Yes, I've known tots that just HAD to have ketchup! LOL ... hopefully it's a stage?? Good luck!
Oh, and you should SEE what ELizabeth does to a plate of hashbrowns.... errrr... a plate of ketchup... that is...

My 8 yr old son is a ketchup addict. It used to be the only way he would eat meat but now it's gotten a little out of hand. He puts so much ketchup on his meat that he can't possibly even taste the meat! Oh, well.

My DS will also be 2 in November and does the same things. He licks the ketchup off everything, eats it with a spoon, or dips his fingers in it.

If you're worried about sugar, there is low-sugar/sugar-free ketchup.

I put DD's ketchup in a separate dish. If she starts just eating the ketchup I give her one warning I will take her ketchup if she does not eat the food too. If she does it again, I take the ketchup. My DD is the type that likes ketchup even on her pancakes. lol There is low sugar and high fructose corn syrup free ketchup too There is also organic ketchup

Great idea babys. I was going to sugggest the ketchup in a very small dipping bowl. Kendra is so dern smart, she'll catch on quickly that she loses her ketchup if she doesn't dip rather than eat the ketchup.

At least she will eat it with ketchup! I would take that...my ds1 hasn't had meat or added a new food to his very limited palate in over a year...he only reduces his choices. There are healthier ketchups but I would try the separate dish thing...seems like a good idea to me!

My dd will be 2 in December and she does the same thing. She easily eats 2-3 tablespoons per meal. I have noticed it the past few days that she has actually been eating the food too though. It must just be a stage that most kids go through. I would just let her eat it and eventually she'll get sick of just eating ketchup.

My DS (21months) loves ketchup as well. Maybe it's an age thing? He will also use BBQ sauce and sweet and sour sauce the same way. The ketchup in a small dipping bowl is an awesome idea! Especially since he has times where he just sucks the ketchup right off his meat.

DD had that stage and eventually grew out of it (she is 10 now). DS likes ketchup sandwiches...we usually only have whole grain bread so I console myself with that and I don't put too much on-- enough that he will probably have a taste in each bite, but not enough that it sits on top of the bread (it soaks in pretty well). That seems to work for him-- he gets it, but limited doses so to speak.

Caiden does the same thing, even asks for a spoon if there is a small bowl of ketchup for dipping nuggets in.. but since I have been pregnant I cant stand the smell of ketchup so I give him pizza sauce or tomato sauce instead.. lol he doesnt seem to notice the difference.. lol but he has been super picky with food lately also, only will each chicken on a wing, turkey dogs or kielbasa sausage.. hope its just a phase!
