I wasn’t sure if I should post this in infants or toddlers, but here goes. Our daughter will be one year old at the end of this month, so it’s around the time we will be needing new car seat. My husband got two hand-me-down seats from a co-worker he knows very well. They appear to be in good shape—no stains, tears etc. They can be used up to age 3 or 4 I believe, and they were bought new for his kids. But my question is, would you use a used car seat? If you get it from someone you know well, would you use it? I’ve heard that if you get it from someone you know and you know it hasn’t been in any accidents then it should be fine. But I’m just unsure. I wanted to know what all the MOMs out there thought? Thanks!

If you are confident they have not been in an accident, I would use them. Also check the expiration dates.

Like Bunsy said -- If you know they haven't been in an accident and they haven't expired you should be fine. I might also check that there were no recalls issued.

To answer the question: No I would not use a used one. I recently got car seat certified and that is just me, I personally see a car seat is an investment for my child's safety.

To reiterate what others have said: If you know it hasn't been in an accident and they're not expired, use them. You can always use them until Babies R Us has a trade in event and then get coupons for new ones if you change your mind down the line.

Same here- if they have been in no accidents, aren't expired and have no recalls, I'd use them.

We have a car seat for each car and one of them was from a co-worker. We checked the expiration and knew that there were no accidents so we use it. It's a great car seat that had only been used for 6 months because they family bought a new vehicle that the seat just didn't sit right in.

Agreed with the others. No accidents, no recalls, not expired, I'd use it.

i think its weird car seats have expiration dates, but i get it too. we have two used car seats. one we got from a fellow mom on here and it has worked perfectly fine. the other we got from DHs husband and is working fine now. I think the biggest thing to worry about besides tears stains etc. is that the belts are working properly

I see in no differently than using ds1s seat for ds2. I would use them as long as they have not been in n accident or expired
