Our daughter is 2 ½ and over the last month or so has had a hard time going to bed. DH and I kind of rotate who puts her down, but we’ll have to sit/lay with her for awhile and then when we get up to leave sometimes she’s ok with it but then will cry once we leave. And other times she gets upset the minute we get up to leave. She went into her big girl bed over a month ago and was fine for about two weeks, and then this routine started. Plus, I’m 38 weeks pregnant and she wants Daddy more than Mama right now. The favoring Daddy over me is hard, but I get it.....kind of.
I feel like we’ve tried everything. We thought maybe there was too much light in her room, so we took care of that, now it’s nice and dim and she has a nightlight and a pillow pet that projects lights on her ceiling, she’s had both those forever. We’ve tried letting her cry for awhile, but she doesn’t calm down. So we have to go back in there, tuck her in, and sometimes lay or sit with her again until she’s ready for us to leave. We’ve tried stuffed animals on the bed to ‘protect her’, we have story time before bed to relax her, we rock, we sing, etc.
We don’t know what else to do. And I’m afraid when the new baby arrives; she’s going to be waking the baby up because she’ll be crying/screaming around bedtime. Their rooms are right next to each other. Plus, I’m so tired lately I head to bed early, but I can’t do that until she’s calmed down and asleep. How do we break her of this habit? A couple times she’s mentioned she was scared of ‘the birdies’ or the wind. But it’s so random, I’m not sure she’s really scared of anything.

I would suggest having one person doing the bedtime routine, at least for now... and with baby coming, it might help if it's your DH. My ds had a hard time at first too going into his big boy bed, but having his favorite lullaby CD helped. It's the Precious Moments lullaby CD, only on Amazon (purple case).. but the Jewel Lullaby CD I've heard is pretty relaxing too! He also has an air purifier in his room, so it lets off a nice hum and keeps the room cool too.. I've also found from experience that ds will not sleep well or at all if his room is not clean!!!
good luck!!
