My daughter isn't liking reading lately. She does have a book series she likes which is: Magic Tree House. She replaces words w/ different words. She & a few others in her class are doing sheets which are: Reading For Fluency sheets. Which means on those sheets she has to read it 5X in a row then we have to write down how she did & write down if she went faster each time. She is suppose to bring a book of the teachers home to read every day.
I need some ideas of what to do w/ her or how to help her. I feel she should be in title 1. She is reading far below where she should be for her grade level. Note: she is 7, in the 1st grade. My ds was slow when he too was in the 1st grade.
Thanks much.

I so want to help her. I am getting frustrated. It took a while b4 ds was really interested in reading. Now he reads a lot. I have been in contact w/ her teacher about this situation regarding my dd. Yes, she was in speech and her speech is fine. her teacher is going to give me a list of sight words to work on w/ dd tomorrow. I am willing to try almost anything right about now.

Keep reading: to her, with her and listening to her. Every kid learns on their own time table. Unless she has a disability, she'll get there. If she does have a reading disability the teachers will catch it with time.
My first son was in 2nd grade before he really "got" reading and caught up to the class. My other 2 were reading both spanish and english early in 1st grade. Different kids. Different time tables.

Ya I hope they catch it if something is/were going on.
We already asked her if she would want to go to summer school if need be of course she said NO. We will keep reading to her of course.

When DS doesn't want to read (sometimes I think his brain is tired from all day at school), we strike up a deal and I'll read one book, then he reads one or we read one together I read one page and he reads the next.

DS had a hard time reading last year when he was in Kindergarten. I would continue to read books to him, and same as Dara we would make a deal and he would read a page, then I would read a page. Make sure you give lots of praise and encouragement. DS really started wanting to read more in 1st grade at his new school when received his "reading chart". His teacher sends home a monthly reading chart, each day that he reads for 20 minutes he gets to color in a square. At the end of the month he brings back the completed chart for a free pizza coupon.
