So DS1 has a severe speech delay and never spoke a word until he was over 2.
Ds2 however was saying about 6-10 words before turning 1. He is almost 13 months now and I notice he doesn't use them much if at all anymore...slight versions of them will still come out and I will maybe hear a whoa for something cool. Is this normal for them to drop words like this? I pray that he isn't starting on the same issues as our oldest, I really thought we were out of the woods with DS2.

P did that too.. he was saying lots of words just after he hit one years old, but then stopped saying them.. doc said stubborness might have something to do with it, or that it's just not a big deal to him.. and he's working on one milestone at a time (or something like that).. walking early, climbing early, kicking a ball early, teething early etc. We just started reading more, and using books that have pictures and single words.. love the babies first books (animals, letters, colors) P is now identifying lots of stuff. good luck!!

Does he continue to communicate in other ways, like using gestures, other sounds and sound sequences, pointing, looking at you, etc.... If nothing else has changed, I would not worry at all for quite some time. There is so much to figure out about language and language processing does take different paths for different children. He seems linguistically quite advanced to have had so many words before age one.

He points at everything and makes a ton of sounds...he is almost never quiet, lol. He is extremely interactive as well...such a joy! I just have no clue how normal speech progression works as my 3 year old talks like a 2 year old now and doesn't follow any general guidelines so I have no idea what to look for.

Does the back slide correlate with him working hard in another area of development (sleeping, growing, walking, etc)? Kids sometimes will move back a bit in one area when they are moving forward in another area.

He has been working on sleeping better I guess...which is an area that needed MAJOR improvement! :-)
