My DD is 16 and will be going to a new school in the fall to start her Junior year. She has painful periods and I'd like to put her on birth control but my DH does not quite understand that. She is not sexually active and I'm not sure if this is too young for her to have to go and have her hoo-ha looked at.
Any thoughts?

I think I was 16. Our family doctor was able to do the exam at the time though. It doesn't hurt to take her and hear what the doctor has to say. I know I was given another option for my painful period than birth control. Just can't remember what it was called though.

LC - Yes, take her in. My girlfriend was put on the pill in 8th grade because her cycle was SO bad she couldn't get out of bed every time it came. She was in nasty pain and it made her iron drop to a dangerous level every month. The pill made her human again.

I'm afraid it may take more than a little pill to make my girl human! I think if I can explain to DH that the mood swings won't be so severe he might jump on board! HA!

I went on birth control at 16. They helped me so much!

Also raising my hand as a BC for period issues user. I was on the pill for that 3 years before I "needed" birth control. It's miserable to be in pain every month.

I, too, went on BC at 16 for the same reason. My SIL is the same age and is fighting with her mom to put her on BC for the same reason. Some parents just seem to associate the pill with sex rather than a hormonal pill.

I'm afraid DH does, Cyndy!
My concern, too, is the actual exam. After all she's been through I don't want it to be tramatic for her.

Have you talked to her about it, LC? Maybe if you can be there with her it would make things a little more comfortable for her during the exam.

We've talked about the pill, but not about what actually happens in the exam room. I'm sure if I explained to the Dr why I needed to be there it would be fine.

EEW! There probably is! That seems so much worse than just experiencing it!

Basically, if the girl is old enough to bleed, she's old enough to go to the gyno. Actually I heard that a girl can go to the lady dr before she actually starts her period, but they don't always look down there, just get to know the girl and her needs.
You could start with her pediatrician if you'd feel more comfortable that way and that dr can recommend the proper gyno for her.

I say go especially if its going to help her! I would talk to her and see how comfortable she is and what she prefers in her dr. I always request a female dr. for my own comfort.
