Lice

So I had been getting notices from school that lice had been going around the school. Unfortunately both kids have dandruff that is a bit yellow, making it much harder to distinguish between lice eggs and dandruff. Today, since ds was sick and snuggling, I caught sight of a nasty huge bug crawling through his hair (not really huge, but I didn't realize that they get that big). So far I've removed 3 live bugs, but have lots of combing to do once I can go out and get the lice kit with the nit comb. Fortunately we've only noticed it on ds, but I did find one dead bug in dd's hair. I haven't seen any other bugs in her hair nor have I seen any eggs or dandruff. Now I'm just waiting for dh to get home to check my hair before I go out to get the lice kit.
Facts about lice: They are very contagous, but can not jump. They are fast and can crawl from head to head quickly. They can live off the head for up to 2 days, so watch out for shared head items such as pillows. Dirty heads have nothing to do with lice, they like clean heads too.
Have you gotten lice through your household yet?

You know anyone reading this post will be itching their head, right Cake?
DD had lice over her 10th birthday. DH took her to get a haircut and that's where they found it. Now if your DD is like mine, her hair is longer. We did the lice kit, we also went online to find out what else we could do and one thing was smother her hair in mayonaisse and put a bag over her head (not her face, just over her hair) and then we layed a pillow with a towel on it and she laid there and watched tv for I don't remember how long and what it does is smother the eggs. We also had to go through, hair by hair, and pull the eggs off. By hand. It's quite labor intensive and NOT FUN.
I'm sorry you have that to look forward to this weekend.

Fortunately it was a 3 day weekend, plus they have a 2 hour late start on monday. Plenty of time to deal with the little buggers.

When DD was in Kindergarten, she had it and we did the treatment and she could go to school, but the daycare had a no nit policy that kept me out of work for a while. I would drop her off, they would check her hair and if they saw any nits, she was sent home. That really sucked!!!!!

Well, I did see a couple of bugs in dd's hair too, then I went to look at my hairbrush, guess what, a bug there too. So I get to have a treatment tonight too, plus I'm making my hubby cut my hair shoulder-length so it's easier to take care of. Yep, I get to have a decent hair cut later this weekend. Dang thick hair. Fortunately I think we got it pretty early, we're not finding a lot of eggs and just a few bugs.
The hair treatment is expensive! It's around $15 a box. X that by 3... This is one of those days I'm glad I married a bald man.

Don't forget about spray for furniture, bagging pillow and stuffed toys. A helpful hint-- running things through dryer on high heat for 20-30 minutes will also kills bugs and nits. It's easier than bagging stuff for so many weeks

Hi cakemakermom, I registered tonight so I could reply and post to your thread. I hope this may help your family. I have known Gonne Asser as an acquaintance, and I have had her youngest dd in Nursery. Featured in the Star Tribune www.startribune.com/lifestyle/113085634.htmlGonne (it's pronounced Honnah and reflects her Dutch ancestry) Asser incorporated as the Minnesota Lice Lady this past fall. She has never done any advertising. Not that she doesn't want to; she hasn't had time. Hi AuntSue! I'm glad you found us!
We only found a total of 6 active lice in the house, 3 on my son's head, 2 on my daughters and one on my brush. We did the treatment- yep expensive imo. But in doing their heads, we still didn't really find any nits. I'm thinking we caught it early. I hope it doesn't come back since it's going through the school right now. I got 2 notifications from both kid about it going through, so I fear it might come back, and not through hatching eggs on the kids heads. I'm thinking the olive oil I spread on ds's head helped the first time, even before I did the rid treatment on his head. I didn't have a nit comb before, but I'm pretty sure having combed through the kids heads, they're free of lice. Those little buggers are really hard to see though. The ones on their heads matched their brown hair. Must be a new generation of them, whenever I saw postings online about them, they claimed they were white or gray... these ones were brown.

some are brown-- the white and gray one may be from ones that hatched-- since the are glued on to the hair strands, something that works to break down the glue is vinegar... doing a rinse with it makes it easier to remove them---also you need a really, really good lighting to see them, sunlight works best so find a good window to look for them-- if they had bugs, there will be nits-- they are tiny and hard to see, once you find a few, it will be easier to see them. good spots to check-- close to scalp, nape of neck and behind the ears.

Ok, we're still finding little ones in ds's hair and mine. It's fewer every time, but it also means I have to wash again and I think I'll have to get new pillows for his and our rooms. Fortunately the one with the longest hair doesn't have it still, but now I don't have much hair. We pulled out the hair clippers and all my hair is 1 inch long. I'm thankful that I don't have hair vanity issues. My hair hasn't been this short since I was little. Hopefully it'll help keep those little buggers at bay.

It has been going around my kids school as well. When I had them in for haircuts recently I was asking about if there is anything chemical free that I can use as a preventive. I purchased a bottle of spray call Ladibugs (I think I have it spelled right). Anyway you spray it in their hair, I spray it in my hands and get the nape of their necks and behind their ears as well. They also recommended spraying their backpacks and their jackets, hoods, etc. It has a mint smell, if that is bothersome to you. In my opinion it works great. We haven't had any make it to our house yet and it has been bad at their school this year. I almost forgot, best part is it is made locally. I love to support small businesses.

I've been wasking lots of stuff. I've gone through their bed sheets, jackets and hats, some rugs. All their toys are in a tote on the balcony to help freeze out anything that is on the stuffed animals. Can't wait for the next bunch... so far 3 letters about lice being on heads, one being sent home because of us. One more will be sent home because of us for the other kid's class.

Yikes, lice is awful. I've never had it myself *knock on wood* but when I was younger my mom worked for a group home and we lived in the home so when the boys got it we all had to be treated. It was definitely a hassle.
I'm glad I have a boy so I can shave his head if he ever gets it and I'd be doing the same thing you did and cutting my hair!
Good luck, I hope you get rid of them quickly.
