Ds is 2 1/2... and is becoming a sponge when it comes to learning. I've decided to put away some of his toy toys and get some more educational toys... We already have lots of books, flash cards, animals, blocks, and mr. potato head downstairs but I feel he still isn't being stimulated enough. He is not really into puzzles.. he has A LOT of them... nor is he really into coloring or arts and crafts. As a gift to him for when baby comes were getting him Alphie... What are some of your kids favorite learning toys? Ones that they stick with and don't lose interest in, in about 5 minutes? lol I'm going to pick him up a magnadoodle today.. he'll like that I think Thanks!!!

My DS is about the same age, and he loves the animals and blocks as well. He also plays with his cars and wooden train set for longer periods of time as well. He is just starting to get into puppets, so maybe he'll get more of those for Christmas.

That's exactly what P is into! I am going to leave his cars out, but I wanted to put his train set away for a while so he doesn't get sick of it.. he got tons of puppets from Ikea for Christmas last year but I have yet to find a small shoe tree to store them all on! I was just at target and was underimpressed with their selection of learning things for toddlers!

You need to go to lakeshore learning. There are 2 one in St Louis park and one in maplewood. They are pricey, but worth it. I have had toys last over 10 years.

I've been in lakeshore.. the one in maplewood is right around teh corner from my house! Maybe I'll have to go back, but last time I was there I didn't find a ton that I thought Pres would actually play with for more than a day... of course he was with me when i went so i probably didn't get to really see everything lol

here is the link for the lakeshore www.lakeshorelearning.com/home/home.jsp. I love everything I have gotten there and they will be having sales getting ready for back to school. On Saturday mornings they have free activities for the kids to do too.

I know what you mean, most of the learning toys I see at Target and such are more of the flashy types of toys that my DS gets bored with in 5 minutes. I did make him a magnetic fishing toy that he will play with for long periods (then I store it away for a couple of weeks). Lakeshore learning does have nice stuff, but you're not always sure what they will really like and play with at this age. If you ever find a good small shoe tree let me know, I haven't found one either:(

DS1's favorite was the wooden Thomas the train toys. He's 7 now and still plays with them.

Toy selection really stinks right now since the big selection of Christmas toys haven't been put out and stores are having clearance sales. I HATE it since my DDs have Sept. b-days they get the shaft for good toys unless I'm really planning ahead. Good luck in your search, I really don't have many ideas to share.

My 2 cents - A lot of "learning toys" have limited use, are not flexible and so kids get bored with them. We favor more open ended toys that can be used endlessly in different ways - doll house, blocks, animals, dolls, etc. By buying some good quality ones (wood usually, not plastic) they hold up well and we add as the years go. So the same basic things we invested in she our son was 1, 2 and 3 are still well used at age 7 going on 8.

DS has loved Little People toys since age of 2....we have a barn, house, zoo (2 in fact as the bigger better one came out a year later), pirate ship, etc. He plays for hours with them. Lately he has been into playing with his "babies" (stuffed animals) and giving them checkups, having them watch TV (he made a tv out of box), reading to them, etc. He also loves playing with toy food. They have toy food at Lakeshore (though it is expensive) and most of ours have come from dollar spot over time.
Like Sharon said these toys we have gotten years out of already and he just expands his imagination with them more and more.
He has some Leapfrog stuff and isn't as into that.
He loves to build forts in the house so that could be something fun to try.

we have all that stuff... may get the little people noahs ark though... that looks really cool... and some more animals and people. I was thinking about getting him a food set but I'm afraid that my dog would chew on the plastic. I think I'm just going to put the train set away, and get out another manipulative.. or his puppets. We have lots of flash cards so maybe i'll organize them into pencil cases so he can use those too as he wants... still trying to find Memory (the original) in a store... they are all character themes these days!

There are good food sets that are wood.

And you can never have too many wooden blocks in my opinion. So if he already has a large unit block set, then you can add castle blocks, architectural blocks, tree blocks, mirror blocks, window blocks etc. I would never run out of block possibilities.
