Funding has been cut for Olympic athletes. "We," as well as many other nations, can't afford to send as many delegates as we used to.

So, it is now offically being said that Michael Phelps is the "Greatest Olympian of all time." Do you agree or disagree? I disagree. Yes, he is an awesome swimmer, however, I don't think that the number of medals you have truly determine if you are the best. Some sports, like swimming, give you many more oportunity to earn medals, others do not. Look how long it took anyone to overtake that gymnast- in gymnastics you can medal many times as well, just not as many times as in swimming. I have no idea WHO I would choose as the best olympian ever, but if I ever do decide I know I won't base it soley on medal count.

I think the greatest olympian swimmer would be a better term.

Angel you are so right. I hadn't really thought of it at all.
I never followed the Olympics until the last few years with Ian. So I couldn't tell you who was the best ever.
We are cheering on Oscar Pistorius. And I was excited about the Canadian woman who got gold in trampoline today but Ian thought she showed poor sportsmanship. We agreed to disagree on that one. Ian likes the women's beach volleyball duo that is doing so well. And he is a big Michael Phelps fan.

I heard someone refer to Michael Phelps as "the most decorated Olympic athlete ever". that is a true statement....I feel like saying he is the "best Olympian ever" is too broad and doesn't take into account things like swimming having more possible events to win medals at than other sports where you could only win one medal in a games.

I think some of it has to do with consistancy though too... three Olympics.. continually improves and doesn't disappoint... my husbands thought.. what other Olympian has been that consistant over eight yrs and three summer or winter games? You could make an arguement for both!

Yes Sarah, the fact that he stayed at the peak of performance from age 15 to age 27 is really impressive, and he could probably continue to train and make the team in 4 more years with where he is at right now.

Dara... I think he will get bored and get that Olympic itch again... I have a feeling we will be seeing him in Rio... at least for a few of his best events!!

I don't think Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever, but I do agree with Hannah, that he's the greatest Olympian swimmer. I am loving watching Misty May and Kerri Walsh! Damn, those girls are good!!! Did anyone see that gymnast from Uzbekistan last night?? It was her 6th Olympics!!!! She competed in the individual vault competition, and wow was she good.
I am getting so sick of NBC's coverage and tape delay. We could have watched all the track finals live yesterday, but no, we of course had to wait until 10 pm last night. I waited all day and night to see the 100M dash, and just when I was getting ready to go to bed, they finally showed it. I can't wait until their "contract" is over....I hope another channel can take over the broadcast and actually do it right!!

Oh MY. I agree 100%. Both of them were incredible. First of all, the gymnast is about 20 years older than the rest of the gymnasts, could hardly stand it -- she could be her competitors' MOTHER. And Pistorius -- wow. To reach that elite level despite such a physical challenge is nothing short of amazing.
