The new commercial asking people to vote for the anti-marriage amendment is similar to the ones that have worked in other states. The man who heads these campaigns has found that telling lies to scare people in the last weeks leading up to an election is very effective, and people will vote against their fellow citizens and their families if they are frightened by the inaccuracies.
So does anything in the commercial scare you? Let's talk! Do you worry will lose your job because of Gays and Lesbians? That charities you support will be forced to close? That your children will learn that some children have two moms or two dads?
Are any of these things frightening to you? When you see the commercial making these claims does it make you feel scared?

This doesn't really pertain to your questions, but the other night i was at a friends house and the anti marriage amendment was brought up. I said that I am voting no, and told them why. They both agreed that they support gay marriage but will not be voting no because in states that already have it legalized, they are being forced to teach that gay marriage is better than traditional marriage. I honestly do not believe this and i just changed the subject because I didn't want to start a debate with them about since I've never heard anything like that before. So, I guess Im just wondering how people are hearing this sort of information, and what do you say to someone who believes if this amendment is passed, we will be forced to teach our kids that gay marriage is "better" than traditional marriage. Sorry if any of that doesn't make sense

Well, there are certainly simple facts you can share to let them know that is incorrect.
1. No matter what happens with the amendment "gay marriage" is still illegal in Minnesota. State law requires that marriage licenses in Minnesota are only given to a man and a woman. The amendment passing or not passing will not change that.
2. Many school districts do teach the fact that there are many types of families - single parents, divorced parents, two moms, two dads...etc. These curricula do not specify that any one family is "better" than another since the purpose is for children to learn the fact that there are many different family structures. The fact that diverse family structures exist is not dependent on any of these families having a marriage license. Kids with two moms or two dads still have two moms or two dads whether or not their parents live in a state that grants them a marriage license.
But anyone who really believes that teachers are being forced to teach that gay families are better than heterosexual ones probably isn't too interested in logic or information. They are likely swallowing lies from the Minnesota Family Council, NOM or another hate group. They probably are the population that the commercials work for, because they don't notice that what they are saying it's at all logical. I guess I'd probably ask them where exactly that happened and try to get them to share more specifics and figure out what exactly they think they are referring to.

No, it doesn't scare me because in my opinion it is all a bunch of lies. It still bothers me that they are putting this out to a vote. I cannot support this amendment for many reasons.

Thank you!!! Yes, they are the type of people who hear this information and just believe it instead of doing research or asking what the truth is. If its brought up again I will definitely bring up the points you mentioned so they have the correct information!

Thinking about what they are saying, I would imagine they are referring to the part of the commercial where is says that kids in Mass. were forced to learn about Gay Marriage. What it refers to is the fact that in a district in Mass. the school district has a curriculum in which the kids learn that there are various family structures - one mom and one dad, single parents, grandparents, two moms or two dads, etc. This curricula was in place before Mass. got fair marriage laws and didn't actually relate to marriage licenses (kids tend not to understand the difference between being married with or without a marriage license, or having a marriage license that is or is not valid in a particular state). Many districts do teach about families whatever the marriage license law is in their state.
Minnesotan United For All Families has info on their website that explains the commercial and what each lie is actually referring to and what the truth of it is. I will find the link later if you like.

Ah yeah now that i think about it, they probably took the info that the schools teach about different families, and turned it around to say that these states are forced to teach it. If you could find that link that would be great!! They will be much more likely to listen if they have something to physically read/watch.

What scares me is the potential to wake up on Nov 7th living in a state that has written discrimination into our state constitution.
I just had a conversation with my son yesterday about how some kids have a mom and dad, some kids have 2 moms or 2 dads, some kids just have a mom or some kids just have a dad (I didn't get into step parents, as I didn't want to be too confusing). The reality is no matter what the vote is on Nov 6th there will always be kids who have 2 moms or 2 dads or 1 mom or 1 dad or a mom & dad or step-parents. This vote does not change families it merely makes discrimination of certain people more permanent.

Nope, not scared! I have actually seen a bunch of posts by my friends the last few weeks on FB saying they are voting No! It also makes me happy that my super Republican DH is voting No!

There was a terrible letter in the Sunday Star Tribune this past weekend defending why people should vote "yes" on the amendment. The whole thing sounded like a bunch of lies to me about how in other states schools were forced to teach about "gay sex" and when parents complained they were put in jail. It was ridiculous! As a public school teacher I can not even begin to imagine a scenario where voting no on the amendment would affect anything being taught in our schools.

Doesn't scare me 'cause I know it's all a bunch of hooey. I just wish more people would do their due diligence and learn fact from fiction.

Betherin- that's what my friends must have seen because they're voting yes solely because of that. They fully support same sex marriage but think that schools are going to be forced to teach kids about it!!! Drives me absolutely nuts!!!
